Asking why you should read to your baby is like asking why you should talk to your baby.
Reading is something we want our kids to do all life long. So if you want your child to fall in love with reading, enjoy stories and books early on, then you had better start reading to them early early on.
And guess what, it is never too soon to read to your baby!
Babies might not understand what you are saying, but every word you say is helping the baby connect with you, learn from you, grow and develop.
Here are a few reasons why you should read to your baby -
1. Babies love to hear your voice and can hear mom (and dad, if close to mom’s belly) even before they are born!
2. Babies love and respond to sounds and textures early on, so touch and feel books or fabric books are a great choice for mom to read and baby to play with.
3. Books are really another toy and which baby does not like toys.
4. Sitting together and reading is a wonderful bonding experience for parents and babies.
5. Flipping pages of books helps babies build their motor skills and co-ordination.
6. Whether you realize it or not, reading to babies helps build their vocabulary.
7. Picture books are great to build hand eye co-ordination – as babies can point to pictures while you read.
8. Reading everyday before bedtime helps seal a reading habit early early on.
9. If you are not a “talker” then reading is a great way to get baby to repeat sounds and keep baby entertained.
10. Reading is probably the only think your child will never outgrow, so why not start really early?!
There are so many great choices amongst kids’ books today! Board books last years and years and my kids (6 and 6 years) still read them. So you have no excuse.
